Faux fur – as harmless (and fashionable!) as it may seem, it’s still a topic dividing people’s minds. Are faux fur jackets wearable when you’re vegan? Which signals to you send?

Wearing faux fur as a vegan

It seems to me that the canon most vegans collectively repeat ist that all kinds of fur – even fake – is disgusting and intolerable. That with wearing faux fur, you make the real, cruel thing not only acceptable but fashionable among the society. And I am not even talking about the disgusting Chinese practice of skinning cats and dogs a live and selling their fur as faux in European countries. No, not even Peta-approved vegan coats (like the one by Unreal Fur I am wearing in the pictures) are acceptable, even more so if the are made to resemble real animal fur. I can definitely understand and I totally get what they are all saying, but can people really not distinguish and make their minds up? To choose the morally right thing, when you have two options?

In the same way, you can argue that wearing a fluffy acrylic sweater promotes the use of wool, or that vegan meat substitutes, that very often look very much like their animal inspiration, promote meat production. I believe, just like you can tell a synthetic sweater from mohair, you can also tell faux and real fur. And that’s the statement that I am making: I am actively choosing the cruelty-free way.
