Fall essentials 2014: white duster coat & pleated leather midi skirt | WHAT PIXIES WEAR – Fashion Blog

New season means wardrobe renewal! Besides my love for chelsea boots this fall (I found the best pair in Milan last month and they can be seen soon on WHAT PIXIES WEAR!), I’m currently having a particular thing for midi lengths. These midi lengths are super hard to shop when you’re tiny: the longer hemlines can become unflattering sooner than you even know what’s going on (see here – still l-o-v-e the dress, though)… so, as a petite girl, what do I look for when shopping and styling these lengths?

How to Shop Midi Lengths as a Petite Girl

  • Shop shorter lengths in regular sizes – this is kind of obvious: what hits the knee in regular sizing, usually is about 10-15cm longer on my tiny frame, but still not long enough to become highly unflattering. Regular midi lengths often hit around mid-calf on a petite frame. They become super hard to wear without making you look like someone cut off a chunk of your body somewhere.
  • Proportion, it’s all about proportion. It’s the key to making midi lengths wearable for petites. It makes all these “you can’t wear this” and “you can’t wear that” petite dressing rules obsolete! The most flattering proportions are 1:2 they say, and you can always include vertical lines in your ensemble, i.e. the knife pleats in the skirt or the unbuttoned duster coat. The moment I close the coat, the whole outfit goes wrong, and I become something like a walking white barrel. ;) Which brings me to the next point…
  • Never ever ever wear them with flats, much less chelsea boots, as tempting as the look may be in your head. I know I am an advocate of “break all the rules and wear whatever you want” – but when you look in the mirror and it looks really off, or disproportionate, just don’t do it. When it looks weird to you, it will be even weirder for others. Plus, you will feel awkward all day. I tried this look with menswear inspired flats and so wanted to make it work, but they made my legs turn into elephant’s legs, which obviously is a big no ;)
If you are petite and can rock midi hemlines with flats (or boots), I congratulate you. Please feel free to share your look in the comments below!

Enough with the theoretical stuff though… tell me, what are your style essentials this fall?
